The Sub-mariner story is a wonderful tale of whimsy created by the ever-popular Bill Mantlo and relative new-guy, Mike Mignola! This may be Mike's very first pencilling job in comics and how he got it is a rather interesting story.

See, originally, Mike wanted to work exclusively as an inker and when he showed me his inking samples I said: "As an inker, you make a great penciller". In such a manner, a star is born.

Eric Delos Santos: "I got this piece from an in-store art auction that was being held by a small local comic shop. Not sure why the owner didn't go the ebay route, but it certainly worked to my advantage. Not only was mine the winning bid, it was the ONLY bid. Needless to say, I was quite pleased. The piece measures a full 11x17, and is signed & dated by Mike from 1983, which means that it actually pre-dates Rocket Raccoon #1. Not sure if this was some sort of character study, or just something Mike had done for fun and then developed into the miniseries by Marvel. A really fun piece though!".
